ISSN

The International Standard Serials Numbering System was initiated at the end of the 60s in United States where the R.R. Bowker Co. was assigning ISSNs for serials of the whole world. At the beginning of the 70s assigning ISSNs was distributed to individual countries and the system spread since that time to more then 90 countries. In the Czech Republic the system works since the 70s.

The system uses 8-digit ISSN numbers for unambigous identification of key titles of continuing resources (formerly serial publications). With the change of the key-title is changed also its ISSN.  The ISSN is mostly used in book market, libraries and by publishers.

The supreme body of the system is the International ISSN Centre in Paris. The supreme body of the Czech Republic is the Czech National ISSN Centre seated in the National Technical Library in Prague.
