Dar z pozůstalosti manželů Nálevkových
knihy
Po roce 1989 působil mimo jiné jako ředitel Ústavu světových dějin FF UK. Specializoval se na nejnovější dějiny, zabýval se také vývojem v Latinské Americe, mj. ve spolupráci se Střediskem iberoamerických studií FF UK. V roce 1998 byl oceněn pamětní medailí Univerzity Karlovy a za knihu Fidel Castro. Podzim diktátora (Epocha, 1997) získal Cenu Egona Erwina Kische. Celkově je autorem skoro padesáti knižních publikací. Se svojí ženou Martou Nálevkovou ovšem také shromáždil úctyhodně rozsáhlou knihovnu z mnoha oblastí humanitních a společenských věd. Několik set svazků z této pozůstalosti převzala Národní knihovna ČR, aby jimi mohla obohatit své fondy.
